With an honest endeavour to make a difference in the lives of our four legged beings, each member at the Animal Welfare Society, has wholeheartedly indulged in some selfless activities. We have successfully strived to do the following:
  • Implementing Animal Birth Control (ABC)and the Anti Rabies Vaccination (ARV) program.
  • Providing rescue, shelter homes and clean drinking water for the mistreated and needy street animals.
  • Dedicatedly providing a twenty-four hour veterinary service to all animals, with emphasis on a mobile veterinary service for stray animals.
  • Organising awareness campaigns regarding adoption schemes of the street animals.
  • Monitoring the implementation of the PCA acts and rules.
  • Conducting awareness campaigns to educate drivers and butchers to handle animals properly with an aim to minimize their suffering.
With some of our efforts, we at AWS have succeeded in sterilising more than 25,000 street dogs and 5000 pet dogs so far. The effort is on to reach a larger number with the ABC-ARV program.

Why ABC - ARV ?
ABC –ARV , a humane method of managing dog population, helps to alleviate the suffering of the animals by controlling their population , thus reducing an animal menace. It controls the spread of Fatal and zoonotic disease like rabies, thereby saving the human race.

The efforts of the Animal Welfare Society can be seen with the Benefits of CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Release, and Vaccination) which is an effective program by itself elevating the lives of animals. In addition to the above, The Animal Welfare Society have indulged in the following.

Health Camps: AWS conducts a number of health and vaccination camps in rural areas to provide necessary medical assistance and guidance to the animal owners/ farmers. In coordination with its branches, AWS also conducts a number of Educational Programmes and Awareness camps in rural areas of the state.

Humane Education
: Animal Welfare Society provides humane educational programs encompassing all aspects of pet care, wildlife and animal welfare. The strive to make a difference shall always be in our heart and soul, but we cannot do it alone. We seek your unconditional support and kindness. Simply because, we believe A kind and compassionate act is often its own reward." ~William John Bennett~

BENEFITS OF CNVR
The Animal Welfare Society takes pride in its Animal Birth Control program which emphasizes the need for CNVR ( Catch, Neuter, Vaccination and Release ) for the welfare of needy animals. Let us learn about this methodical program:

What is CNVR ?

Catch
  • Dogs are caught using the net method.
  • While in the net, the dog is weighed and a drug package (an anaesthetic) is prepared based on its weight.
  • The pre anaesthetic drugs are injected intramuscularly while the dog is still in the net.
  • A Basic Physical examination is conducted.
  • The ears are notched and cauterised for identification, and the surgery area is properly prepared aseptically. (One ear of the community animals is notched and cauterised to permanently mark the dog as sterilised as this helps the dog catchers in identification)
Neuter
  • In male animals, pre scrotal incision is preferred while in females the mid line incision or flank region is followed.
  • Muscle layer: Use interrupted sutures, taking big portions of muscle and peritoneum, using synthetic absorbable suture material (Polyglycolic acid).
  • Subcuticular layer: Continuous sutures using shorter-lasting suture, such as absorbable suture, size 2-0
  • Subdermal: Mattress suture with a sub dermal knot, using absorbable suture size 2-0, followed by a burial knot. The whole surgery is a minimum invasion technique of a key hole surgery.
  • Epidermal: Superglue neither for strength nor for holding the wound together but instead acts as a seal to prevent infection for up to 72 hours.A long-acting antibiotic is also given to cover this period. The superglue seal also prevents flies from laying eggs in the wound.
Vaccination
  • The dog is given an anti rabies vaccine
Release
  • After surgery, the dogs are placed in a covered recovery pen and monitored.
  • After they are well and active, they are released to the place from where they were caught.

What are the benefits of CNVR ?
  • It is a quick and efficient procedure, using modern surgical techniques and materials.
  • It does not require days of sheltering for recovery.
  • Animals can be released safely back to their own territories usually on the same day or next day with no further treatment required.
  • On humanitarian grounds, we (AWS) keep the dogs for two days before releasing them to their respective areas.

Enhancing its performance day by day, the AWS, also takes pride in Adoption Placement due to which animals have found new homes with loving qualified families since 2004. The animals are given a thorough physical examination, vaccinations and treatment by a Participating Veterinarian to insure they are healthy and well adjusted
AWS is trying to uplift the lives of our animals by changing the mindset of the human beings. Simply because, we believe "A society is defined not only by what it creates, but by what it refuses to destroy." John Sawhill
